short stories

Sunday,August 6

So much has happened to me recently that I hardly know where to startThree months ago I had my work out in a zillion places and no one was getting back to me. Now I have a short story, Beneath the Velvet Blue Moon in an anthology called Blue Moon Enchantment being published by Highland Press, an erotic short story called Touche, is already on the website of Ocean's Mist Press for sale with three more to come, and DiskUs has taken eight of my short stories and a novel, Fire and Ice.

I guess it's a good feeling knowing I'll have a by-line. After writing over 170 or so confessions stories without having your name attached, it's time to take some credit for my work. I hope people like my stuff. Part of writing process is knowing you're giving others pleasure.

Well, I'm not waiting for a prince to come sweep me off my feet. Just a major publisher.

Gotta go see my mother-in-law who's in rehab. No she didn't start riding lessons at eighty plus. She took a header getting out of bed. But she's feisty--I should know--and will soon be out jogging again.

Hopefully, I'll speak to you soon...

It's September, already. Where has the time flown? I'm back at work on my paranormal REVERIE. Hopefully, I'll be able to get somewhere with it before I'm dragged away to do some other project.

Thinking about this month, in particular, I can't help but wonder if there'll be some kind of reponse from Al Qaida on the anniversary of 9/11. Being a New Yorker, I took the destruction of the twin towers and the terrible loss of life personally. It's really sad to think that with all man's technological advances, he still lives behaves as Cave men. I wonder, has anybody mentioned to these crazy terrorists that the Crusades are over? Contrary to how those people think, life is precious and irreplaceable.

Until next time,

Candy

October 31st

Today's Halloween. Time's flying by so quickly, hopefully the witches I encounter today will still be riding brooms.

My short story, MASQUERADE, debuts on the Ocean's Mist Press website today. Check it out.

DiskUs now has two of my stories up on their site. DYSFUNCTIONAL and I HITCH A RIDE INTO A SLAVERY RING. In the next few months, they'll be putting up three more short stories and my novel, FIRE AND ICE. There's a lot more short stories following that. Check my site for updates as I get them.

If I ever find all the half-started stories on pads I've lost somewhere in the house, I'll really be in good shape--a literary treasure hunt.

One writer friend suggested I get a flash drive and wear it around my neck. That would eliminate lost stories. Then where would I put the Albatross? And my eight grade English teacher thought I was a slacker.

Well, I've got a number of flash drives now and guess what? The stories are still lost.

Before I sign off I should share one of those moments in life that will stay with me forever. I was at work--at the optometrist--not writing when my mother calls me on my cell phone. Here's how the conversation went.

"Cand."

"Hi, Ma, what's up?" I asked with a few people waiting to go in to see the doctor. (Picture a very small office where two people's a crowd)

"I can't find your aunt (her sister), she's missing and you've got to find her."

"Mom, I'm at work and really can't talk now. Besides, have you forgotten I'm in New York and she's with you in Florida?"

That cracked everyone one up. It turns out that my aunt wasn't missing. She was moved to another room at the hospital and the phone hadn't been turned on yet.

Until next time,

Candy

November 4

Well I made it another year on this planet. Yep, yesterday was my birthday. I try to keep it quiet, my way of stretching the years, but somehow the people you least want to remember always do. They're the younger relatives who always find that card referring to how old you're getting that zings right through you like an arrow. Surprisingly, I only got one which I promptly filed in my step-on filing cabinet. You know, the one where you'd love to file your bills. Anyway, I wore my I refuse to grow up button and felt just fine.

I had a fab day despite the extra year.

Hugs,

Candy

Ocean's Mist Press just released my story called FORBBIDEN FRUIT. When I heard how well it was doing, it caught me by surprise. However, I'm glad. It always makes me happy when I write something that people really like. That's what writing is all about. When you start churning out stories just for the sake of getting stuff out there, you've become a hack.

Deep down inside I've always wanted to make a difference. A great many of my confession stories deal with issues that often affect us. I'm glad that I'm going to have the opportunity to showcase them on DiskUs.

So many stories, so little time to pen them. I should have never fired my clone.

Until the next time,

Candy

Today is my youngest son's birthday. I know because I was there.

And tomorrow, December 1st, I will be participating in a chat at 8:00 PM Eastern Standard time @ http://www.heartsentromance.com/ with some of my fellow authors who have stories in Highland Press's HOLIDAY IN THE HEART anthology. So if you're around, come join us. There will be fun and lots of prizes. I'll keep my eye open for you. See you tomorrow night,

Candy

December 24th

Happy Chanukah, Happy Kwanzaa and Merry Christmas! to everyone! May everyone get whatever their hearts' desire. I know I did. I'm starting a new job working in a library, got a new laptop to replace my last one whose cursor became cursed and wouldn't work, and a camera. Now if I figure out how to use the darn thing...

Drive carefully and stay well,

Candy

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I hope this year brings happiness and love to everyone! Of course money is always an option, as well.

A few days ago, I learned that Whiskey Creek Press will be publishing my novel, AUTUMN LEAVES. Now that's a great way to start the year.

Now if I can find a way to become rich...

Health and happiness!

I have to share the great news!! Blue Moon Enchantment, the anthology that my Beneath the Velvet Blue Moon has been nominated for a Pearl! Who would have thought...

My day job at the library is taking over my life. At least I'm getting to read whatever my heart desires. Now if I find the time to write as well...

Got to get to work. Until next time...

A great deal has happened since my last entry. I've gotten a contract for another novel called A HEATED ROMANCE from Highland Press. It's my Janet Evanovich meets Back Draft plot.

The sole female firefighter goes head-to-head with her fellow fireman as well as an arsonist.

I love the book, but there are three others I'd like to sell even more. Hopefully at my writing group's annual luncheon, I'll meet the editor who'll fulfill my dreams.

Work beckons--or is it the paycheck? Until next time...

January 24, 2008

A great deal has happened since my last entry. I have sold my manuscript, A Bridge to Eternity, to Tiger Publications. it should be out in 2010.

Ocean's Mist Press closed and is slated to reopen again. I', becoming more and more leery of epublishers. That's why I'm thrilled that A Heated Romance and A Bridge to Eternity are being published by traditional paper publishers.

Now if I can only finish one of the three novels I've begun...

'til next time,

Candy

 February 21, 2008

I'm still waiting for the release date of my A HEATED ROMANCE, which should have been out already.  However, I just got a peak at AUTUMN LEAVES' cover and it's an eye-catcher.

Scope it out under my books link before you leave.  I finally finished one of the three novels I'd mentioned last time.  Day jobs can be hazardous to your writing careers.  It's called THE RECONSTRUCTION OF CARLA MILLHOUSE.  It's a young married woman 's struggle to lose weight and win back her philandering husband.  In the end, she realizes her goals have changed.  To say that she's surrounded by a cast of characters is an understatement.  I've sent out the partial and will let you know the results.

Gotta go to the D-job.  Until we talk again,

Candy

February 25

My wait is over!!  A HEATED ROMANCE is out and now available at Barnes and Noble and Amazon.  The links are: http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/results.asp?WRD=A+Heated+Romance&z=y

I couldn't be any more thrilled and hope you'll enjoy it.

March 14, 2008

Finally got away on vacation.  I went to Vegas for a couple of days and met my son there and went on to San Francisco.  This was my first vacation in about four years.  I had a blast--just being away.

Tomorrow is my booksigning for A Heated Romance.  It will be held at the Barnes & Nobles in Huntington at 1:00.  It should be fun.

I'm looking forward to my next book, Autumn Leaves, due out soon.  It's weird having two books published so close together, but with two different publishers, I guess you can't control that.

Well, I hope to see you tomorrow.

Candy

March 26, 2008

Been busy.  Haven't had the time to chat.  I survived the booksigning.  It was fun to be around support friends from the library as well as fellow writers.  I'm trying to set up another one so those who would have liked to come, but had other commitments, can come.

Great news!  Got it last night.  My fourth novel, THE RECONSTRUCTION OF CARLA MILLHOUSE, was just sold to Tiger Publications.  It's about a woman who tries to win back her cheating husband and what she discovers along the way.

On another note, my second novel, AUTUMN LEAVES will debut in April, as planned.

Until next time,

Candy

April 15, 2008

AUTUMN LEAVES is now on sale at Whiskey Creek Press.  It's a great story, so I hope it sells.

April 22, 2008

AUTUMN LEAVES hit number 8 on the site.   Hope it goes higher.

May 17, 2008

Got a moment to breathe and bring everyone up to date on what's been happening in Candyland.  My day job has just gotten more stressful with my supervisor leaving.  The scheduling has fallen into my lap as well as taking care of things until a replacement for her has been found.  She was a wonderful person and had the circulation department running like a well-oiled piece of machinery and will be missed by all.

As for my writing, I just sold another novel to Tiger Press.  It's called THE PROMISE.  The best way to describe it is to say:  It's Romeo and Juliet meet the Godfather.  I also sold a short story under my moniker, Candy Caine called OOPS! to Erotique Press.

My fellow Long Island Romance Writers and I are gearing up for our annual luncheon to be held at the Milleridge Inn in Jericho, New York on June 13th.  We have many wonderful editors and agents coming to mingle with us and other writers from all over the country.  Everyone gets to mingle and pitch their work.  The atmosphere and food--especially the chocolate mousse dessert is terrific.  A great time is always had by all.

Well, gotta go.  Life beckons,

Candy

 June 29, 2008

Well, it's official.  Tiger Press has been dissolved.  Four of my novels would have been published by them.  Now it will be back to square one.  Though in the meantime, I've decided to get some of my children's stories out.

Our annual luncheon for LIRW was held at the Milleridge in and was a success.  Many of our writer friends from the local New Jersey and Pennsylvania chapters of the RWA were there along with a terrific bunch of agents and editors.

The food was good and the schmoozing was great.  I sat next to Faith Black and as usual, tried desperately to find something chaste enough to send her.  But alas, I couldn't.  I love the gal and just write something just for her.

Several members of the LIRW, including myself, will be going to the New Jersey Conference this October.  It should be a blast.

Well, gotta run,

Candy

October 14, 2008

Erotique Press has taken my story, DEVIL OR ANGEL. Basically it's about a guy, John Winston, who wakes up in a hospital bed following an auto accident to find a pretty nurse taking care of him.  They hit it off and begin to date. As time goes on, though, he discovers the woman is not the angel he thought she was.  Instead, she is known in the trade as Lady Diana, a dominatrix.  She coaxes John slowly into her world of bondage, which he finds as addictive as it is exciting-until he stumbles upon the truth that Lady Diana is operating more than one business on the side.

I'll post the cover as soon as I get it.

I've reedited two of my books for kids.  Hopefully, I'll find a home for these two novels.  It's weird writing for both ends of the spectrum.  Sometimes it feels as if I'm two different people.

My husband, Robert, calls Candy Caine, my bad girl persona.  It's almost as if she were my "evil" twin.

Now I wait for the release date of OOPS! from Erotique Press and my favorite novel, A TWIST OF FATE, from Highland Press.

I am also writing a sequel to AUTUMN LEAVES.  For those of you who have read it, it was basically Kate Douglas' story.  The sequel, ALWAYS, will be her daughter, Paige's story.

Well, gotta go to my day job.

October 26, 2008

Just got back from a two-day conference hosted by the New Jersey Romance Writers.  Had a terrific time with those Jersey girls, many of whom come to the LIRW (Long Island Romance Writers) luncheon which is held at the Milleridge Inn;s Carriage House.  By the way, our next annual luncheon will be held on June 12, 2009.

The keynote speaker was none other than Lisa Scottoline.  What a lady and speaker.  We all know how great her books are, but she's a down-to-earth person, as well.

I went with two of my favorite writer buddies, Gina Ardito and Debora Dennis.

Now I have to get back to work and finish a Christmas story for Erotique, send out some submissions and eventually get back to ALWAYS.

Until next time,

Candy

November 13, 2008

My hubby took me for my birthday on a cruise to the Eastern Caribbean.  All I kept hearing in my head was the theme from the TV show Gilligan's Island.  That went well with my Titanic Syndrome.  We hadn't been away together for awhile and it took sometime getting used to being alone and carefree.  The only problem was he got a little peeved each time he knocked on the door  of the cabin and I asked him to identify himself with some photo ID.  Anyway, aside from the two bouts of seasickness, slight sun poisoning and the fact I was a love-madnet for mosquitoes, we had a great time.  We dune-buggied around Grand Turk Island.  It was definitely not smooth sand, but coral.  I won't ever complain about the suspension on my car.  Also, driving on the wrong side of the road, especially when you're making turns is somewhat nerve-wracking, to say the least.  Our cousins across the Pond should have gotten with the program a long time ago.  Next was Half Moon Cay, a private island owned by Carnival.  We took a tour of the lagoon in a glass-bottom boat.  The coral formations were simply fantastic.  The last stop was Nassau.  We took a tour of the Island, stopping at two old British forts and finally a visit to a pirate museum.  That was fun, though Johnny Depp wasn't there.  Who doesn't like pirates?  The food was all around us 24/7.  It was basically a non-stop food fest.  But, it was fun and relaxing--except for the rushing back and forth to catch airline flights only to have long waits at the airport security check points.

Gotta go to work and the real world.  Until next time,

Candy

Great news! OOPS! my erotic short story is out at http://www.erotique.com/.

Here's a little something about it:

In a vain attempt to move on with her life...

Sara is drowning herself in a Cosmopolitan, trying to wash away the memory of the man who swore to love only her banging some bimbo in their bed. Suddenly, her skin quivers with the sensation of being watched. Though she finds it strange to discover a sensuously attractive African-American woman scoping out a white female, she's also intrigued. Introductions follow, as well as new delights. Despite her new friend's good intentions, Sara isn't interested in armchair advice. Discovering she is too tipsy to drive, Sara accepts a ride with Deidre, only to find herself being seduced. With her introduction to scintillating sexual horizons reaching a feverish pitch, Sara succumbs to the fervor of unexplored pleasures. Now that Sara has redefined her sexuality, will she be too hot for Deidre to handle? In a vain attempt to move on with her life...

Now that Sara has redefined her sexuality, will she be too hot for Deidre to handle?

Excerpt:
Halfway into my second Cosmopolitan, I noticed her sizing me up. Strange, I thought, why would an African-American chick be interested in me? Last time I looked, I was a white, strawberry-blonde female-with a ton of freckles. Usually, I attracted a guy looking to score, not some pretty woman with large, almond shaped eyes. My interest piqued, I stole glimpses at her from the corner of my eye. She had high cheekbones, which gave her an exotic look, and full lips-the kind many women would pay big bucks to have. Her glossy, dark-brown hair was short and spiked, but on her, it looked sexy. She was one helluva eye-fetching package.

A small impish smile played across her full lips as if she knew I was watching her watch me. This entire scenario made no sense, at all-unless I'd ventured into a gay bar. However, a quick glance at the other patrons didn't support that theory, so I continued to sip my drink, gearing up for the next one. I wanted to obliterate the ugly scene, which clung to my memory, like fleas on a dog. It had me getting blotto every night to help me get through the endless hours.

Even now, I could close my eyes and still see Jeremy holding the redhead's long legs wide apart as he rammed his love stick into her like a jack knife. The guy who'd professed to desire only me. Yeah, right. He probably meant when I was with him. As I watched that carnal spectacle, I began to wonder how many other women he'd screwed in our bed. It wouldn't have been so traumatic had I not been in this position before. Damn! Are all men natural-born cheats or do I keep picking the same kind of dog, whose vocabs lacked words like faithful and honesty?

Her sidling off the bar stool yanked me from my thoughts. She was taller than I'd imagined her to be as she walked toward me; her leather mini skirt hardly concealed her long, creamy-beige, shapely legs.

As she slipped onto the stool next to me, she purred, "You look like you need a friend."

"And you're James Taylor, right?"

For my CandyCaine readers, it has the usual stuff to make Candace Gold blush.  I hope you all will read it.
